Lesson: Kimura Switch
The practicing student will start in the Broken Turtle position by laying on their side with their back facing the assisting student. The assisting student will straddle the legs of the practicing student and place one hand in front of the belly and the second hand at the mid-back.
The practicing student will apply a Kimura grip to the hand that is in front of the stomach and then remove their bottom leg from under the assisting student. Once the leg is cleared from under the assisting student, the practicing student will base on that foot and use it to slide their lower back across the floor, away from the assisting student until their back is angled away. To encourage the student to do this correctly, ask the assisting student to be heavy on the hand that is placed on the floor and have the practicing student use the hip that is on the floor to push into the wrist laterally with the goal of knocking the hand out of the way. As the hand starts to move, encourage the practicing student to apply pressure with the Kimura. The hip movement should compliment the Kimura pressure very nicely.
Once the outside hip has cleared under the posted hand, and the back is angled away, the practicing student should sit up and take the hand that is grabbing their own wrist and place it between the legs of the assisting student. This should set up the Switch grip and allow easy access to the assisting student’s back by laying back into the Switch (the shoulder/tricep in the assisting student’s armpit).
Possible Extensions:
Start the practicing student in the Turtle position and have the assisting student start directly behind the practicing student with their arms huggin around the waist. The move can be initiated by hooking one leg on the inside of the legs and then sitting out/falling down to the Broken Turtle position. Make sure the correct leg is hooking before the fall.
Start by having the assisting student complete the Duck Under technique from standing. Once on the back they should hug around the waist and the practicing student will first move into the Bear Crawl position, then into the Turtle position before entering into the Broken Turtle position.
Possible Refinements:
Make sure the practicing student only removes the bottom leg after securing the Kimura. This leg that is left between the legs will be a hook for Back Control.
Sometimes, while holding onto the assisting student's wrist after inserting the Switch, it can bind the assisting student’s arm. Make sure the technique is applied slowly in case this happens that the practicing student can stop their body if the assisting student taps.
The angle of the lower body, specifically of the back, needs to be away from the assisting partner before putting in the Switch. Occasionally, students have a difficult time with the body angle and the power of the Switch is lost if the body angle is not correct.
