Student Objectives:

  1. The student will apply the Technical Stand-Up from the Butterfly position using good technique with a compliant partner.

  2. The student will build value for inside head control while performing the Bulldozer Sweep

Lesson: Bulldozer Sweep from Butterfly Guard

The practicing student will start in the Butterfly position by sitting on the ground with posture. The legs should be bent, with the heels pulled in close to the groin. The practicing student should then place their wrists on their knees with their palms facing up. The assisting student will Triangle Sit with their knees on each side of the practicing student’s ankles and then slightly lean forward.

The practicing student will then enter into the Watching TV position by placing one hand on the floor and the other hand in the Underhook position. Then, by pushing off of the posted hand, the practicing student will exaggerate the rotation towards the Underhook until the space is removed and the shin of the Butterfly hook is firmly pressed against the inside of the assisting student’s thigh.

The focus should then be put on Inside Head Control. The practicing student can accomplish this by placing the top of their head on the side of the assisting student’s neck, face, or under the chin. This will depend on the assisting student’s height and level of posture. Once the head is in place the practicing student will do a modified Technical Stand up. The practicing student will elevate their hips using the posted hand and the posted foot and drag the non-posted leg back. The goal should be to stay low, keep inside head control, and reposition the non-posted foot to drive off.

Once the foot has cleared under the body, and the practicing student has the ability to push off the foot and create forward momentum. They will drive forward while transferring their posted hand from the floor to the Overhook position. The practicing student will continue driving forward while creating a Knee Cut Motion with the posted foot across the assisting student’s body in the direction of the Overhook.

As the assisting student begins to fall on their side, the practicing student will transition into the Kesa Gatame position and only lift their head from the Inside Head Control when certain they will force the assisting student to the bottom position.

Possible Extensions:

  • The Bulldozer Sweep and the Overhook Sweep are very commonly paired together. If the assisting student gets Inside Head Control and forces the practicing student back down, then the Overhook Sweep is a great option as falling to the side is part of that move.

  • If the practicing student achieves Inside Head Control but the assisting student still forces them back towards the floor, then there is a transition to the back. This can be set up during the forward pressure by having the practicing student recentering themselves and S-Gripping their hands in the Double Under position while maintaining the Butterfly Hooks. The practicing student will then hyper flair their elbows while applying a controlled partial extension of their hooks. The purpose of the leg extension is only to create a desengagement for one hook and then it should be removed. Upon Removal, this should open a hip pathway to Back Control very similar to that of the Half Guard to the Back Control.

    This transition is going to take some practice as there is control in the S-Grip and how you make your partner base on their hand and/or Hands. I would suggest practicing this transition on it’s own before applying a combination attack with the Bulldozer Sweep.

  • When the practicing student forces the Watching TV Position it is common for opponents to frame and create space and/or Hand Fight. During this situation the Arm Drag becomes viable and should be the go to movement from the Butterfly Position. Instructors should review that lesson plan before applying the Armdrag as an extension to the Bulldozer.

Possible Refinements:

  • Keeping Inside Head Control is extremely important. Commonly while performing the modified Technical Standup students will allow their head to disengage. This needs to be monitored Because if the assisting student takes the Inside Head Control they will be able to force the practicing student back down to the ground.

  • Make sure the practicing student doesn’t spear the assisting student in the neck while finishing the Knee Cut portion of this movement with Inside Head Control.

  • Sometimes students try to fully stand with the Technical Stand Up. This often changes the directional force of the Inside Head Control and can make driving effectively difficult.
